Canada’s Potential EU Membership: An Unlikely Yet Intriguing Proposition

Joachim Streit, a German politician and member of the European Parliament, has launched a campaign advocating for Canada’s membership in the European Union (EU). Despite never having visited Canada, Streit envisions the North American country as a valuable addition to the EU, citing its strong economic standing, high education levels, and vast energy reserves.

Streit’s campaign gained momentum following Donald Trump’s return to power and the subsequent trade war, which has strained global alliances. He argues that Canada, often described as the “most European country outside of Europe,” could strengthen the EU amidst shifting global dynamics.

Although the EU treaty stipulates that only European states can apply for membership, Streit points to exceptions like France’s overseas territories and Cyprus to suggest that Canada’s potential membership could be legally feasible. He has submitted a written question to the European Parliament seeking clarification on this matter.

In addition to pushing for full membership, Streit proposes a professional exchange program between the EU and Canada, akin to the Erasmus program, to foster deeper integration. He has been in contact with Canadian officials and received support from various quarters, including suggestions on how to navigate Canada’s geographic location.

While the idea of Canada joining the EU may seem aspirational, Streit hopes it will at least lead to stronger ties similar to those the EU has with Norway and Switzerland. He believes that historical opportunities for such integrations are rare and should be seized when they arise.
